Persepolis

Since Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi was animated, the animation affects the story a lot. The story follows a coming of age for Marjane with her life during the Iranian Revolution. She is was exposed to some gruesome concepts. The animation in Persepolis, made it a bit easier to take in the horrors of the Iranian Revolution along with the executions', and the beatings of people. If it was actual film, there would be some aspects that could not be shown or it would be more like a documentary versus a story. The animation also allowed certain things to be drawing in ways so that the movement helps us see how the people are from the main girl's point of view. An example is when the main girl is wearing western ideas, but the teachers or nuns do not allow this and they move in an "evil" manner. Animation allows film to do more and express ideas differently than film of actual humans.

  1. I think there was less of an onus on the visuals and more on the events that were explored. Some people can think violence on any level is not worth watching because of the imagery we create in our heads.

  2. I agree that animation has the power to reduce some of the seriousness and gruesome concepts, but it still has the ability to create the central theme . The animation can make people have less stress while watching, also it can us abstraction to perform some point of view that we rarely see in real life.

  3. It is definitely true that the presentation of such gruesome topics through animation allowed the film to be a bit easier to watch than if it was done in live action. I also agree that animation gives more freedom in terms of creativity and what can be expressed through imagery.

  4. I totally agree. If this movie was live action it would be totally traumatizing to watch. Its amazing how much of an effect animation can have on storytelling.
